The international masterplan competition for the Sheraton Hotel at Heliopolis in Cairo happened in 2000. The brief was to add new hotel rooms / apartments, a conference centre and pool amenities in an holistic design approach to expand the existing building. The building already had 600 average sized rooms and a popular poolside but was quite dated. The design evolved in its first phase to become a luxury hotel for Westin with 250 rooms, built over a 1800 person ballroom in the basement and expansive public areas. A second phase added another 1200 person ballroom with a connecting pre-function and further restaurants. The building was rebranded as Fairmont before the work was complete, and has recently been rebranded again as a Hilton with the luxury wing soon to become a Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
