The international masterplan competition for the Sheraton Hotel at Heliopolis in Cairo happened in 1999. The brief was to add new hotel rooms / apartments, a conference centre and pool amenities to expand the existing Sheraton hotel building. The design was a luxury hotel as a Westin with 250 rooms, built over a 1800 person basement ballroom and expansive public areas. Phase 2 added another 1200 person ballroom with a connecting pre-function and further restaurants. The building was rebranded as Fairmont before the work was complete, and has recently been rebranded again as a Hilton with the luxury hotel being refitted and soon to become a Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
