The Oman Convention Centre was masterplanned in 2009 and completed in 2020. The original design was the winning entry in an international design competition, and was selected for its iconic use of a unique dome as the central identifiable feature. This roof feature developed into a series of leafs or petals, symbolic of the Omani desert rose,. The walls of the building form colonnades around the arrival space. The entrance is the focal point of a boulevard that rises from the plains below and culminates in a formally landscaped ceremonial approach. The building uses layers of light and screens to differentiate its public spaces on a grand scale.
